Kim Kyoung-Mi
Abstract
In 2010, south korea had the highest elderly suicide rate (72 per population of 100,000) among all OECD countries. This issue has been a growing concern in the society, which needs urgent attention. Thus, this study examines how experiences of discrimination and exclusion are related to suicide ideation, and how depression may operate in this relationship, which may contribute to identifying factors affecting elderly people`s suicide and provide implications for the issue of suicide in the elderly. This study used convenience sampling with the elderly residing in Metropolitan, middle or small urban, and rural areas (N=473). This study suggest that suicide is not merely a mental health issue, but closely related to social factors such as discrimination and exclusion. Thus, comprehensive assistance and intervention from more diverse regions, which are based on research on discrimination and exclusion, would be needed to address suicide risk among elderly population.
